Habitat Restoration Volunteer Event

Join the National Park Service and Community Nature Connection to restore habitat by watering, removing weeds, and mulching around native plantings recently installed adjacent to a frequently-used public trail. This restoration was planned before the Woolsey Fire and taking care of native species planted in this burned area will enhance the natural post-fire recovery in the area. Our restoration is focused on ash-oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, and wetland communities which have been diminished through the years from urban development and human-related disturbances. These native communities are critical for supporting wildlife and plants that future generations can enjoy as the restoration matures over time. In the future, birdwatchers will be able to see a greater diversity of bird species, especially in the enhanced woodland area.

Our goal is to add mulch, water, and remove invasive weeds around all of our young native plants that are still getting established. Species you will protect include sages, buckwheat, oak trees, ash trees, mulefat, and more. Thank you for stewarding our public lands.

What to bring:

• Sturdy shoes or boots
• Pants and long-sleeves
• Reusable water bottle
• Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
• Gloves, tools, and water refills will be provided.

Driving Directions from Hwy-101: Exit Kanan Rd heading south (2.9 mi), Turn left onto Troutdale Drive (0.4 mi), turn left onto the one-way bridge and continue on Mulholland Hwy (0.2 mi) and the parking lot will be on your right.

Parking Directions: Volunteers should park in the parking lot at Peter Strauss Ranch at the intersection of Mulholland Hwy and Careful Avenue.

Heat Protection: The site will be sunny and hot, please prepare accordingly with sun protection, cooling rags, and refillable water bottles! Volunteers should take breaks in the shade frequently!

We are accepting 50 volunteers for this event, please RSVP to reserve your spot. Capping the total volunteers is necessary due to limited parking and sensitive resources on the recently burned site. Please carpool if you can.
